You may know Roberto Medina from his stage name, Sapphire Starr. Having performed in clubs and musical revues across the New York area, Mr. Medina has always enjoyed a vibrant, active lifestyle. As an outspoken member of the LGBTQ+ community and The Imperial Court of New York, an organization that supports various LGBTQ+ charities and hosts events for members of the community living with HIV/AIDS and cancer, Mr. Medina stresses the importance of consistent vigilance over one’s health and encourages everyone to seek professional medical care when needed.
So, when health issues began to impact Mr. Medina’s daily life, he turned to the Maimonides Prostate Center for care. Mr. Medina was diagnosed with a rare, benign Leydig cell tumor.
Dr. David Silver, Director of the Division of Urology and leader of the Maimonides Prostate Center, performed an orchiectomy on Mr. Medina and implanted a prosthetic testicle to treat his condition. Throughout Mr. Medina’s journey, our staff was by his side providing comfort and support, and answering any questions he had.
“Everyone I met at Maimonides was professional and kind,” Mr. Medina said. “My issues were addressed and my fears were calmed as the staff at Maimonides helped me through this medical journey.”
